Tara Sad asked me to help spread the word and “get out the troops”. – Lil
Last year, on Saturday April 20, 2013, over sixty volunteers got together for Walpole’s first official “Clean Up Day’. Volunteering families came from all over town, and included members of 4H Club, Girl Scout Troop 20018, and Boy Scout Troop 229.
In three hours, the volunteers covered almost twenty miles of road , collecting trash that included 33 tires, 188 pounds of mixed metals, 2 1/2 gallons of antifreeze, piles of cans and bottles – and an entire toilet! Used diapers, box springs and mailboxes are just some of the more unusual items found. When the collection was finished, prizes were awarded, chili and coffee were consumed, and every one of the tired participants vowed to come back and do it again next year.
Well – it’s next year, and we’re doing it again!
Our Second Annual Walpole ‘Clean Up Day’ will be Saturday, April 26th (in observance of Earth Day). All volunteers will meet at the Town Hall to get their team and route assignments, pile of blue bags, and hot coffee for fortification. Then the hunt for trash begins!
We want to break last year’s numbers – so we need everyone to come and lend a hand. It’s dirty. It’s grubby. But it’s fun! Think of it as a ‘spring cleaning’ for our roads.
We’ll meet at 8:00 in the morning. Bring your family and friends. Bring your work gloves, waterproof shoes/boots and bright clothing. We will be done by 11:00, when the collected trash will be heaped on the Episcopal Church lawn for prize judging. Anyone with trucks especially welcome!
We look forward to another great day when we can get together as a community to spiff up our wonderful town for spring!
