October 4th is ‘Solar Saturday’ at Distant Hill Gardens

Home-Sweet-Home

Saturday, October 4th from 9 am to 4 pm, Distant Hill Gardens in Walpole will be hosting a Solar Open House in addition to their monthly Open Garden. The event is being held in conjunction with the American Solar Energy Society’s (ASES) 19th annual National Solar Tour.

The Passive Solar Home at Distant Hill Gardens will be the main focus of the day, with its Trombe Wall and Sunspace, a 3.15 kW roof-mounted Photovoltaic (PV) solar electric array, a ground mounted Evacuated Tube Solar Hot Water Heater and a ductless Mini-split Heat Pump heating and cooling system.

Autumn Joy

Michael and Kathy Nerrie, builders and stewards of Distant Hill Gardens, will be available all day to answer your questions about the energy saving features of the home.

After touring the solar home, be sure to take some time to explore the unique natural and human-made features of the 58-acre property. Stroll the many paths through the beautiful ornamental gardens; search for the many whimsical metal sculptures hidden throughout the gardens; experience the quaking cranberry bog boardwalk; walk the new half-mile long loop trail; or let the kids explore ‘White-Rock Woods’, a nature play area at Distant Hill Gardens. Also of interest is the large stone circle aligned to the setting sun on the winter solstice, and the geologically unique outcroppings of stretched pebbles.

Thanks, Lil, for posting our Solar Open House flyer. This is the last event of the season at Distant Hill Gardens, but we will return next spring with more. Plans are in the works for our annual vernal pool exploration, a mushroom hunt, an insect identification walk, a presentation about our drinking water and more.

Have a warm winter, and thanks again for your work with the Walpolean.
