Celebrate Nature this Weekend at Distant Hill Gardens – 7/5/15

Nature’s Fireworks at Distant Hill

Nature’s “fireworks” display of Rose Pogonia Orchids in the fen.

Distant Hill Gardens in Walpole will be open to the public this coming Saturday, July 4, and Sunday, July 5, from 10 am to 4 pm for a celebration of Nature. On both Saturday and Sunday, every hour on the hour, 10 am to 3 pm, there will be educational guided ‘Bog Tours’ of this rare wetland habitat.

A native carnivorous plant, the Round-leaved Sundew.

Many of the native plants are in bloom in our bog, including the beautiful Rose Pogonia Orchid (Pagonia ophioglossoides), Large Cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon), White Water Lily (Nymphaea odorata) and a small native carnivorous plant the Round-leaved Sundew (Drosera rotundifolia).

We think you will find the boardwalk across our quaking Cranberry Bog to be a unique experience!

After exploring the quaking bog, we will visit our nearby Black Ash Seep at Distant Hill to view the Swamp Beacons (Mitrula elegans), an interesting orange fungi putting on a colorful display in the shallow waters of this uncommon wetland.

Please Note: Depending on the number of people on any given ‘Bog Tour’, the boardwalk may sink slightly under the weight of the group.
Please wear boots or shoes that can get wet… or go barefoot!

Swamp Beacons - No Two Alike

In addition to the display of color in the wetlands, the Cultivated Gardens at Distant Hill Gardens have numerous blooming plants bursting forth with colors that can rival any pyrotechnics spectacle. Even if you have visited Distant Hill Gardens in the past, you might find it is worth another visit.
