The Planning Board has been working on updating the Master Plan for a few months. The format is as follows: State the section of the Master Plan (ex. Population and Housing) being worked on.

​  Have a Goal for that section.

​  List one or more Objectives for that section.

​  List one or more Action Plans for accomplishing that Objective.

In previous months the Board had completed these tasks for the sections on Population and Housing and Natural Resources (Natural Features).

At Tuesday night’s meeting, the Board members just about finalized updating the remaining sections of the Master Plan as well as two sections that are being added to the Master Plan. Those remaining sections were Traffic and Transportation, Land Use and Historic and Recreational Resources. The new sections are Community Facilities and Services and Economic Development/Utilities/Energy.

Here is an example of what the Board is doing in the section on Land Use. These Actions and Objectives may change slightly as discussion on these topics is ongoing.

Section: Land Use

Goal: To guide the development of land in a manner that is consistent with Walpole’s natural features and existing built environment.

​Objective: Preserve the scenic elements of the natural environment and protect Walpole’s land.

​Action 1. Review and identify areas of scenic importance.

​Objective 2: Preserve agricultural land and support farming activities.

​Action 1. Review current ordinances and regulations to ensure that they are farm ​friendly.

​Action 2: Foster efforts to preserve important farmland.

​Objective 3: Preserve the individual character and identify of Walpole’s three villages.

​Action 1. Gather information from representatives of the three villages as to what they ​want preserved.

Senior Planner Lisa Murphy facilitated the discussion and will be back next month on the fourth Tuesday of the month with Draft No. 1 of the final document of the entire Master Plan for more discussion.
