Open Garden Fundraiser for the Fall Mountain Food Shelf

You can win this beautiful handmade queen-size bed quilt!

On Sunday July 19th, from 10 am to 4 pm, Distant Hill Gardens in Walpole will host a fundraiser for the Fall Mountain Food Shelf. The Food Shelf has recently lost major funding from one of their longtime donors, and the future of this incredibly important community service is in jeopardy.

The entire fifty-eight acre property at Distant Hill Gardens will be open for the public to explore, including the beautiful ornamental shrub gardens, the unique stone circle, the boardwalk over a quaking cranberry bog, dozens of whimsical metal sculptures, the new half-mile long accessible nature trail, and more!

There is no charge for this event, but cash donations for the Food Shelf will be greatly appreciated. Please be as generous as you can.

Half of the Whole

As an added bonus, there will be guided tours of the large raised-bed vegetable garden at Distant Hill Gardens every hour on the hour. Pick up some tips and tricks on growing your own vegetables, or share your own gardening knowledge with others.

In addition, there will be raffle tickets available for a gorgeous handmade queen-size quilt made by a ‘The Ladies of Distant Hill’ with all proceeds to benefit the Food Shelf.

If you can’t attend this fundraiser please consider making a donation using your PayPal account or any major credit card. Your name will automatically be entered into the Quilt Raffle with any online donation.

This fundraiser will be held rain or shine. And don’t be put off if the weather is inclement that day – the gardens are actually even more beautiful when wet – just remember to bring your umbrella if the weather is questionable!

Celebrate Nature this Weekend at Distant Hill Gardens – 7/5/15

Nature’s Fireworks at Distant Hill

Rose Pogonia Orchid

Nature’s “fireworks” display of Rose Pogonia Orchids in the fen.

Distant Hill Gardens in Walpole will be open to the public this coming Saturday, July 4, and Sunday, July 5, from 10 am to 4 pm for a celebration of Nature. On both Saturday and Sunday, every hour on the hour, 10 am to 3 pm, there will be educational guided ‘Bog Tours’ of this rare wetland habitat.

A native carnivorous plant, the Round-leaved Sundew.

Many of the native plants are in bloom in our bog, including the beautiful Rose Pogonia Orchid (Pagonia ophioglossoides), Large Cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon), White Water Lily (Nymphaea odorata) and a small native carnivorous plant the Round-leaved Sundew (Drosera rotundifolia).

We think you will find the boardwalk across our quaking Cranberry Bog to be a unique experience!

After exploring the quaking bog, we will visit our nearby Black Ash Seep at Distant Hill to view the Swamp Beacons (Mitrula elegans), an interesting orange fungi putting on a colorful display in the shallow waters of this uncommon wetland.

Please Note: Depending on the number of people on any given ‘Bog Tour’, the boardwalk may sink slightly under the weight of the group.
Please wear boots or shoes that can get wet… or go barefoot!

In addition to the display of color in the wetlands, the Cultivated Gardens at Distant Hill Gardens have numerous blooming plants bursting forth with colors that can rival any pyrotechnics spectacle. Even if you have visited Distant Hill Gardens in the past, you might find it is worth another visit.

Public Hearing – 7/13/15

Cathy White asked that i do what I can to assure that people are aware of the hearing that is being held on July 13th.  Eric Merklein had written an article for the Clarion that I would call to your attention in case you missed it.  – Lil

My husband and I thought that it might be appropriate for the Walpolean to publish news of the Public Hearing scheduled (according to the Clarion we received today) for Monday, July 13th at 7:00 PM at the Town Hall regarding the conversion of Jack Franks’ apartment development into state-subsidized “work-force” housing of 21 units.
This is his new “phase 1” portion of the development he continues to hope to build that originally consisted of: 50-some odd condos for over age 55 residents; then 48 apartment units for over 55 residents, then 65 apartment units for anyone who could afford them. Now he wants to put in 21 apartments for “work-force” housing.
Confused? We are too, as is pretty much every Walpolean. This is an important public hearing, and deserves as much coverage as it can get so that residents know what is planned for their town.
We hope you can use your voice to spread the word so that we can all be educated as to what this means.

Costume Ladies to host 2015 Colossal Coachman hat design contest for the Monadnock region – 7/3/15

Costume Ladies was recently announced as one of 40 stores across the United States which will participate in the first-ever Colossal Coachman Contest — a hat design contest presented by headwear manufacturer and distributor, elope Inc.

On Friday, July 3, contestants 18 years of age and older are invited to Costume Ladies’ shop to fill out an application and receive a free Coachman top hat to decorate however they please. The Kick-off Party begins at 2 pm and will last until 6. There will be door-prizes and Walpole Creamery coupons, as well as fresh popcorn from Ray Boas’ old-time popcorn cart. Contestants must return to the store by Friday, July 17, to submit their original coachman designs. These designs will be judged based on their use of the elope hat style, creativity, overall effect, and crowd appeal. The panel of 5 judges will include local notables of acknowledged creativity and artistic appreciation.

On Monday, July 20, 3 of our local contestants will be chosen as our store winner and national semi-finalist, along with 2 runners-up who will receive 2nd and 3rd place prizes. The semi-finalist will then be in the running for the grand prize, which is a $1100 prize package of elope hats and party-planning supplies.

elope Inc. is a leading distributor of costumes and accessories. “We love costuming and creating original designs. Our goal with this contest is to share that DIY and maker sensibility with our retailers,” said CEO Kevin Johnson. “We want to inspire creative costume parties that are about fun and friends – and not just on Halloween!”

The grand prize winner will be announced on or around August 19, 2015. Full details and national contest rules are available at elope.com/colossal.
