Special Offer this Weekend

The Bellows Walpole Inn may be a little out of the village and away from the action of Old Home Days but they would still like to be part of the fun.  Bobby and Steve told me that if you mention my name you are welcome to a complimentary Snickerdoodle Cookie with the purchase of any meal.  The offer is good for Friday, Saturday and Sunday and I guess could be a check on how many people:

#1 Read the Walpolean

#2 Know my name

Notice I am not including my name here. :-)

Nature’s Fireworks at Distant Hill – 7/5/14

Even though the myriad of people who are working so hard on Old Home Days may not feel like it right now, there will be life after Old Home Days.  This Nature Walk that Michael Nerrie has coming up the following Saturday should be just the thing to help fill the void. – Lil

Nature’s “fireworks” display of Rose Pogonia Orchids in the fen.

Distant Hill Gardens in Walpole will be open from 9 am to 4 pm on Saturday, July 5, for a post Independence Day celebration of Nature. The highlight of the day will be a ‘Bog Walk’ from 10 am to noon. Come and experience ‘walking on water’ across our quaking Cranberry Bog, by way of a boardwalk snaking through the Peatland.

(Note: This so-called Bog at Distant Hill is technically a Fen. The difference between the two will be discussed on the Walk.)

Many of ’Nature’s Fireworks’ should be in bloom in our bog/fen, including the beautiful Rose Pogonia Orchid (Pagonia ophioglossoides), Large Cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon), White Water Lily (Nymphaea odorata) and a small native carnivorous plant the Round-leaved Sundew (Drosera rotundifolia).

After exploring the fen, we will visit a nearby Black Ash Seep at Distant Hill to look at the Swamp Beacons (Mitrula elegans), an interesting orange fungi putting on a colorful display in the shallow waters of the wetland.

In addition to the ‘Fireworks’ display in the wetlands, the Cultivated Gardens have numerous blooming plants bursting forth with colors and form that can rival any pyrotechnics spectacle.

A $5 donation for entrance to the gardens includes the Bog Walk.

This Week’s Farmers Market – 6/27/14

Good Morning, the rain this week, came early. Hopefully, the damage from the heavy rains was minimal.

But Friday’s forecast is simply perfect for a Farmers Market. This weekend also marks Walpole’s Old Home Days so our community is bursting with events and activities. The WFM is no exception. Come with your family, get a bite to eat, enjoy the music of Daniel Hartigan. There will be a variety of games and activities for young and young at heart. Aime, of Aime’s Art Farm, is planning on painting animal caricature on hands and ankles, she is charging $2.00 and will donate half of the proceeds to the WFM. Take a Farmer Trivia Challenge and then put a ticket in the FREE RAFFLE for WFM products donated by some of our vendors.

We have a great group of vendors this week. Roughly, sixteen vendors have said that they would be with us including Abenaki Springs, Brookfield Farm, Orchard Hill Breadworks, Iris X Lotions and Potions, Keri’s Kures, The Farmers Table, Flying Canvas Studio, Not Your Ordinary Farm, Walpole Valley Farms, Walpole Mountain View Winery, and McGill’s Maple Products (maple frappes maple frappes maple frappes).

If you have not had a chance to get to the market yet this summer, this would be a Friday not to be missed. We’d love to see everyone come out and support local farmers and producers. You can use your debit/credit/EBT card. EBT cardholders can take advantage of our Double Up on Veggie Bucks program.

At The Market This Week

Good Morning All, and what a beauty of a morning.

We had a summer storm here the night before last, refreshing and taking care of the pollen that seems to be everywhere.

The size of the market is smaller this week, family commitments like graduations will limit the number of regular vendors this week. We do have Ray Boas joining us with a book that he’s put together featuring a history of Walpole NH using postcards. Billy Stahl is joining us this week, a local musician who’s family is often at the market. Come enjoy his acoustic guitar.

Although the number of vendors is limited, the offerings are great. Abenaki Springs will have fresh organically grown salad greens and if the weather holds lovely field grown strawberries. Brookfield Farm offers a selection of pasture raised meats and will be featuring Sausage Sticks to munch on while your at the market, working up an appetite with all that shopping. Orchard Hill Breadworks will be coming with their usual breads, muffins, and pizza to enjoy while you are at the market or to bring home, I hear that they are bringing Mint Chocolate Chip Cookies…. yum! Sawyers Cheese will be there with samples, and you can talk with Judy from Not Your Ordinary Farm about her Lamb and Duck.

Iris X and Keri’s Kures are featuring remedies for body and soul. Looking for a gift for a grad or a bride, what about a hand crafted item from Amie’s Art Farm or Old Bridge Farm?

The Walpole Farmers Market is happy to provide EBT/SNAP Benefits. Use your card, and with the Double Up on Veggie Bucks you can purchase up to $20 dollars worth of local foods.

For more information about the Walpole Farmers Market, visit the website at Walpolefarmersmarket.com, follow us on facebook, or contact Holly Gowdy at 445-5104

Hope to see you at the market the forecast is for sunny and 75 degrees.
