Please Help Make Thanksgiving Happen

The Employees at L.A. Burdick’s wanted readers of The Walpolean to hear about their commitment to make Thanksgiving happen for families in the area as well as ask for your help.  This article is appearing in the Monadnock Shopper but seemed appropriate for this forum as well.  Thanks in advance for any and all help you can give. Fopr more information you can contact Jennifer Doyle at 800-229-2419 – Lil

Hunger in America.  It’s something that should not exist and a condition that many relentlessly combat, and yet every year we are confronted with rising numbers of families and children who simply do not have enough to eat.

As Thanksgiving approaches the Monadnock Region, there are more families in need here than ever before, and not enough resources to go around.  This year, the Fall Mountain Food Shelf was unable to secure enough donations to put together their annual Thanksgiving meal boxes, and as a result more than 1,000 families will likely be going without on a holiday that exemplifies American abundance and largesse.

This state of things was unacceptable to Cathy Watson, Director of Operations for L.A. Burdick Chocolate.  When she learned that the food shelf was effectively forced to cancel Thanksgiving, she made the commitment for Burdick’s to provide all of the necessary food for the holiday meal boxes.  In the next few weeks she hopes that the company and its employees will be able to collect enough food through direct purchases and large-scale donations to make Thanksgiving a joyous holiday for those families who need it most.

“If you want to get something done, you have to start small,” Watson said.

By starting directly within the Monadnock community, it is her hope that Burdick’s will be able to not only make Thanksgiving possible for many deserving families, but also give the food shelf a much-needed boost.   To that end, Burdick’s will begin collecting and storing donations immediately.  The company is looking for all the items that make Thanksgiving such a special holiday: turkeys, potatoes, squash, stuffing mix, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie filling, and more.

All food collected will be delivered to the Fall Mountain Food Shelf two weeks prior to Thanksgiving.  If you are interested in making a donation, or are able to provide low pricing on items for purchase, please contact Burdick Chocolate at 800-229-2419. Donations in the form of trucking or other services would also be gratefully accepted and appreciated.

WALPOLE CORN MAZE

The corn is ready, and The Walpole Players are preparing for its third annual Corn Maze the last three weekends in October. Child-friendly characters will greet adventurers in the daytime performances from 2 to 4 PM, and a cadre of ghouls and familiar scary folk will haunt the corn during the evening shows from 7 to 9 PM.

In a new larger location this year, the Walpole Corn Maze is located in Walpole, NH, on Route 12 behind the Scoop Shop opposite Shaws Plaza. Opening on Saturday, October 12th with the “scary version”, Sunday the 13th is the children’s maze, still suitable for all ages. The last two weekends, October 18, 19, 20, 25, 26 and 17, the “scary maze” will be on Friday and Saturday evenings from 7 to 9 PM, and the “children’s maze” Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 2 to 4 PM.  Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for kids 12 and under.

The final weekend, October 25, 26 and 27 will be Haunted Walpole. In addition to the Corn Maze there will be many additional activities including hayrides, horror movies, a harvest festival, a cemetery tour and Spooktacula sponsored by the Walpole Village School. Join the fun, “if you dare.”

Writer’s Group In Walpole

Barbara Dretzin sent this inoformation regarding a Writer’s Group.  Sounds like fun.  The idea of a deadline makes a lot of sense to me since I can find lots of ways to procrastinate – sometimes, even going as far as washing windows! – Lil

Do you like to write, but feel you have no audience?  Do you have personal stories to tell, perhaps stories about your childhood or other events that your family would like to know?  Stories you’ve meant to write down but have never gotten around to?

You sound like an ideal member of Writing It Down, a group of non-professional writers who meet monthly to share their work.  There is no teacher – just an appreciative exchange, with feedback when you want it.   We’ve written and heard about a wide range of life experiences from a childhood in Europe, to a terrifying trip up the cog railway on Mt. Washington, to just life and times in Walpole.  We find having a monthly deadline a helpful incentive to write, and enjoy hearing, and are often inspired by, what others have written.
Please join us at the Walpole Library on the 3rd Saturday of each month at 10:00 am – 11:30. Bring paper, pen or your laptop, and any writing you have done. Our next meetings will be on October 19th and November 16th.
For information call: Walpole Library: 603-756-9806, or just come.
