The Eleventh Commandment

This came from Chas Street, with an addendum from me. – Lil

A few weeks back, I was part of a brave group of souls who went out on a rainy Saturday to pick up trash as part of the Annual Walpole Clean-up Day.  Even though the weather didn’t cooperate, it was very successful.  I was given a stretch of March Hill Road to do, and what I found made me cringe.  When you’re actually out there looking, it was a mess.

Unless you’re over 60, you probably don’t remember a wonderful woman named Ladybird Johnson who was the first person I remember who pointed out what was happening.   She was the first person who really energized the “Don’t Litter” campaign on our public byways even though it had become quite grotesque by then.  I remember driving up from Florida as a kid and there was trash and junk all over the highways; in fact it was the norm to throw your trash out the window instead of keeping a trash bag in the car.

Anyway, fast forward about 60 years and amazingly the highways look 100% better than they ever did back in 1965.  Somehow, even though the popuation has almost doubled in that timeframe, we integrated a cultural change to not litter that most of us have adopted.  So, on behalf of the Selectboard, the Road Department and the two folks who cut their hands picking up trash, we ask that you reiterate the importance of the eleventh commandment with your children when you discuss other important issues with them.  If you’ve forgotten it, it’s “Thou shall not throw thy beer can out thy window” on the way home.  And for you older children, we’d appreciate your cooperation too.

Thank you.  Chas Street

Whatever happened to all those, “$100 Fine for Littering” signs?  Maybe they were just ignored like the “No Parking This Side of the Street” ones along the Common. – Lil

Farmers Market – 5/17/14

We MUST be getting closer to summer.  Here comes the Farmers Market back on the Common. – Lil

Hi everyone, Holly Gowdy here writing her first email to WFM very loyal patrons, Jill gave me a quick navigation lesson on sending an email this morning, so here goes… I plan to send a few updates out this week as the first market approaches.

The updated vendor list went on to the webpage earlier today, you will be happy to see a lot of familiar vendors, as well as, some new to us this year.

The first market will include live music from Don Dawson, of Westminster. There will be locally made prepared foods too. Traditionally our vendors put together a FREE raffle for shoppers at the season opener – they are putting that together again this year. Lets keep our fingers crossed for some warm spring weather… bring your family and bring some chairs, take a breather this Friday afternoon, and enjoy the Walpole Farmers Market.

For additional info you can check out the WFM Website or follow us on facebook for additional highlights for the season opener and during the rest of the season.

YMCA Hosts Healthy Kids Day and Camp Open House – 5/17/14

Two popular Meeting Waters YMCA events come together for a fun and informative day for the entire family. A regional leader in both summer camp programming and health promotion for youth and families, Meeting Waters YMCA will host a combined YMCA Healthy Kids Day and Camp Open House at its Lewis Day Camp facility in Springfield on Saturday, May 17th. The event takes place, rain or shine, from 10 to noon and is open to the public, free-of-charge.

During the event, prospective campers and their parents can meet the camp’s staff leaders, tour some of the 52 acre Lewis Day Camp facility, learn about financial assistance options, the Summer Food Program and daily bussing, and hear from campers and camp parents from previous years about their experiences.

At the same time, families will have the opportunity to participate in several different activities from the Y’s Healthy Family Home initiative which promotes healthy eating, routine physical activity and spending more time together as a family.

2014 marks Meeting Waters YMCA’s 50th consecutive summer providing enriching day camp programming. Over that half-a-century, more than 12,000 area youth have kept their minds and bodies engaged at a time when far too many children fall back. Research shows that without access to well-designed camp programs, kids fall behind academically and gain weight twice as fast during summer than the school year. Meeting Waters Y’s Day Camps are designed to prevent summer learning loss and weight gain while also developing new friendships and lifelong memories.

More information about Meeting Waters YMCA’s camps and health promotion services is available at their website at http://www.meetingwatersymca.org, on their Facebook page, or by calling their office nearest you—Brattleboro: 246-1036; Bellows Falls/Fall Mountain: 463-4769, or Springfield: 885-8131.

Founded in 1895, Meeting Waters YMCA is a charitable, social service organization serving the Brattleboro, Bellows Falls, Springfield and Fall Mountain regions. It strengthens the foundations of community through youth development, healthy living, social responsibility and family strengthening.

Volunteer for Meals on Wheels

Dave and I are looking to “retire” from delivering Meals on Wheels.  We do the North Walpole/Walpole route on Friday and it takes about an hour and a half to drop in on some great Senior Citizens to brighten their day and provide a hot, well-balanced meal.  We’ve been doing it for 3-4 years and Friday, May 16th will be our last day. Please call or email if you can do this.  Your availability will mean a lot.  Thanks – Lil
