Memorial Day Parade?

I have been asked about the parade by a couple of people and I was unable to provide an answer.  If there is someone out there who can help with yes/no and time, we would appreciate it.  Remember, it takes a village to keep a village up-to-date. Thanks. – Lil

St. John’s Church Set to Host Spring Craft Fair

This announcement comes from Mary Schoppmeyer.  Thanks for sharing. – Lil

St. John’s Episcopal Church in Walpole will host a Spring Craft Fair at the Walpole Town Hall on Saturday, May 31st, 2014 from 9 AM to 2 PM.

Many local artisans will offer an astonishing array of pottery, textiles, wood, painting, jewelry, and perhaps some unexpected mediums! All the items are handmade, so come support our local artists and find some treasures for gifts and yourself. Enjoy a light lunch and a hot or cold beverage as you browse the booths, or visit the St. John’s bake sale table to choose a goodie for the evening meal’s dessert. The event will be held rain or shine. We’ll see you there!

St. John’s welcomes everyone, no exceptions. Sunday School begins at 9:45 each week; services begin at 10 AM, followed by coffee hour. Find us on the corner of Westminster and Elm Streets in Walpole, NH.

A LONG WEEKEND IN NEW HAMPSHIRE

It is almost curtain time for The Walpole Players’ Old Home Days 2014 production. Performances will be Friday and Saturday June 20 and 21 the week before Old Home Days, and once the festivities begin the show will be held Thursday June 26 and Saturday June 28. The curtain will rise at 7PM.

This year’s original play, written and directed by Gail Golec, is titled “A Long Weekend in New Hampshire.” This comedy, in four-self contained acts, offers entertaining vignettes of country life in New Hampshire (maybe even Walpole). Act I- Life in 4/4 Time, goes through the hectic life of a modern young family; Act II – The Funeral, shows a family coming together after a funeral and sharing old stories; Act III -The Farmstand, explores the events surrounding an ordinary day at the local vegetable stand; and Act IV- The Lumberman, The Farmer and The Fisherman, is the dramatic recitation of an epic poem (with footnotes).

The cast of 27 people includes, besides the familiar Walpole Players, a number of new members joining The Walpole Players for the first time. Gail recently reported, “rehearsals are really going well and the cast is excited about the show and looking forward to opening night!”

Tickets are $10 for adults, and $5 for under 12 years of age, and are available at Galloway Real Estate, Real to Reel Video, Murray’s, Costume Ladies, and Village Square Booksellers.

Farmers Market Cancelled today – 5/23/14

Saw this a little late, but at least you will know I tried to head you off. – Lil

Good Afternoon…

I know you are likely chomping at the bit to attend the market this afternoon.

I have been watching the weather and have stopped at the little ball field, it is mighty wet. The National Weather Service is forecasting thundershowers and a chance of hail this afternoon. So, even though our farmers and this market is normally a RAIN or SHINE event, I am going to cancel the market for this afternoon. I see in the ten day weather forecast that next Friday is looking Sunny and in the 70’s. So, here’s hoping for good weather …. see you all next week.

The Eleventh Commandment

This came from Chas Street, with an addendum from me. – Lil

A few weeks back, I was part of a brave group of souls who went out on a rainy Saturday to pick up trash as part of the Annual Walpole Clean-up Day.  Even though the weather didn’t cooperate, it was very successful.  I was given a stretch of March Hill Road to do, and what I found made me cringe.  When you’re actually out there looking, it was a mess.

Unless you’re over 60, you probably don’t remember a wonderful woman named Ladybird Johnson who was the first person I remember who pointed out what was happening.   She was the first person who really energized the “Don’t Litter” campaign on our public byways even though it had become quite grotesque by then.  I remember driving up from Florida as a kid and there was trash and junk all over the highways; in fact it was the norm to throw your trash out the window instead of keeping a trash bag in the car.

Anyway, fast forward about 60 years and amazingly the highways look 100% better than they ever did back in 1965.  Somehow, even though the popuation has almost doubled in that timeframe, we integrated a cultural change to not litter that most of us have adopted.  So, on behalf of the Selectboard, the Road Department and the two folks who cut their hands picking up trash, we ask that you reiterate the importance of the eleventh commandment with your children when you discuss other important issues with them.  If you’ve forgotten it, it’s “Thou shall not throw thy beer can out thy window” on the way home.  And for you older children, we’d appreciate your cooperation too.

Thank you.  Chas Street

Whatever happened to all those, “$100 Fine for Littering” signs?  Maybe they were just ignored like the “No Parking This Side of the Street” ones along the Common. – Lil

Farmers Market – 5/23/14

Note the special location this week. – Lil

At The Market This Week

The Walpole Farmers Market moves to it’s temporary location – the Town Hall and Common are reserved for a wedding. So, look for us in the ball field just next to St. John’s Church, across Westminister Street, north of the Town Hall.

The fabulous news is that Orchard Hill Breadworks will be joining us this week, along with Old Bridge Farm. This market will also feature early season salad greens, jams – jellies – pickles, artisan cheeses, locally grown meats, plant starts, healthful teas, and naturally based lotions and potions. Last week CMC Mushrooms were grilling there own Mushroom Burgers… making our mouths water…

We hope to see you Friday from 4 to 6, in our alternate location, for more information about the Walpole Farmers Market please visit our website Walpolefarmersmarket.com or friend us on Facbook!
