Extended Hours at Walpole Historical Society

extended hours

The Walpole Historical Society is having another free special event this Saturday evening, August 10, 2013.  We’d love to have families come for a visit.  There will be refreshments, and the children can “shop” from our toy peddler’s cart for some goodies to take home!  Everyone can enjoy visiting our current exhibit “Walpole Shops,” to discover the shopping experience during Walpole’s earlier years.  Our Gift Shop will also be open for…you guessed it…more shopping!

Book Sale Needs Books

Antonia Andreoli asked me to remind everyone of the Book Sale sponsored by the Friends of the Library.  This is such an important event because it lends such incredible support to our wonderful libraary. This is a great chance to clean those book shelves and make room for more books. A table at the Tag Sale would provide the opportunity to clean a little more.  (If you are inclined to clean, that is!) – Lil

The sale will be held on Saturday and Sunday, October 25, 26 & 27, 2013 in the Walpole Middle School Gymnasium.

The success of the book sale depends completely on donations of gently used paperbacks, hardcover books, CDs, DVDs, records and children’s books. (No encyclopedias, text books, VHS tapes or tape cassettes please.) Donations are now being accepted and we need your help. Please bring your book donations to the Walpole Town Library on Fridays, Saturdays, or Mondays. For information and questions on donating books call the library at 756-9806.

Tables for the tag sale are available for a fee of $25.00. For reserving a table for the tag sale, contact Pam Howard at 756-4224.

Did You Know?

Looks like asure sign that the summer will be over before we know it.  When I was a Principal and flipped the calendar for August first my stomach always did a flip as well – Lil
July 31, 2013

“Did You Know” are messages sent from FMRHS to better communicate what is happening at our high school.

1. With regard to the students receiving computers this fall:  Ten students took advantage of working at FMRHS on Monday, July 29th to earn money to pay the $40 insurance fee.  If you are interested, two additional days are scheduled: Wednesday, August 7th and Saturday, August 17th.  Please call Ms. Gendron to schedule 4 hours on a specific date.

2. Student welcome back letters with schedules will be mailed Monday, August 5th.

3. I would like to form an official FMRHS Alumni Association. The first meeting will be Wednesday, August 14th from 7 to 8 PM in the high school cafeteria.

This town-wide exhibit celebrates the talent and expression of Alstead artists, from emerging closet painters to established pros. It includes a section devoted to work of artists of the past, most notably, Marion Nicholl Rawson, artist, writer and historian. The show may be seen during library hours (Wednesdays, 11-5; Thursdays, 11-7; Fridays, 11-5; Saturdays, 9-noon) through August 1.

New Display at the Historical Society

walpole shops

This graphic that I received from Andrea Goins seems to say it all but she went on to explain that she especially love the collection of old store and business letterheads and bills of sale that have the most charming typography. Christie Winmill deciphered beautiful Spencerian script from old store ledgers and pharmacy prescription books, and those are also on display. Thanks to Carol and Ed Reardon, a terrific collection of artifacts from the old C.C. Davis Drug Store are on loan for the display. There’s a lot to see and learn about early commerce, and we hope folks will stop by and have a look into their history!
