Please Help Make Thanksgiving Happen

The Employees at L.A. Burdick’s wanted readers of The Walpolean to hear about their commitment to make Thanksgiving happen for families in the area as well as ask for your help.  This article is appearing in the Monadnock Shopper but seemed appropriate for this forum as well.  Thanks in advance for any and all help you can give. Fopr more information you can contact Jennifer Doyle at 800-229-2419 – Lil

Hunger in America.  It’s something that should not exist and a condition that many relentlessly combat, and yet every year we are confronted with rising numbers of families and children who simply do not have enough to eat.

As Thanksgiving approaches the Monadnock Region, there are more families in need here than ever before, and not enough resources to go around.  This year, the Fall Mountain Food Shelf was unable to secure enough donations to put together their annual Thanksgiving meal boxes, and as a result more than 1,000 families will likely be going without on a holiday that exemplifies American abundance and largesse.

This state of things was unacceptable to Cathy Watson, Director of Operations for L.A. Burdick Chocolate.  When she learned that the food shelf was effectively forced to cancel Thanksgiving, she made the commitment for Burdick’s to provide all of the necessary food for the holiday meal boxes.  In the next few weeks she hopes that the company and its employees will be able to collect enough food through direct purchases and large-scale donations to make Thanksgiving a joyous holiday for those families who need it most.

“If you want to get something done, you have to start small,” Watson said.

By starting directly within the Monadnock community, it is her hope that Burdick’s will be able to not only make Thanksgiving possible for many deserving families, but also give the food shelf a much-needed boost.   To that end, Burdick’s will begin collecting and storing donations immediately.  The company is looking for all the items that make Thanksgiving such a special holiday: turkeys, potatoes, squash, stuffing mix, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie filling, and more.

All food collected will be delivered to the Fall Mountain Food Shelf two weeks prior to Thanksgiving.  If you are interested in making a donation, or are able to provide low pricing on items for purchase, please contact Burdick Chocolate at 800-229-2419. Donations in the form of trucking or other services would also be gratefully accepted and appreciated.

Should donations be dropped off at the restaurant?

Thank you, Burdicks, for stepping in when needed. I’ve known of many examples of Burdick’s generosity to the community, and I for one want to say thank you. Lyn Cooke
