Reminder – Great Decisions – 6/26/23
“Great Decisions”
Politics in Latin America – with Special Guest Jose Manuel Lezcano
Our next “Great Decisions” topic for discussion is “Politics in Latin America.” We will meet on Monday, June 26, at 6:00 p.m. in the Walpole Town Library. Joining us will be Cuban-American virtuoso guitarist Jose Manuel Lezcano, Professor Emeritus at Keene State College. Renowned as a composer, teacher, folklorist and classical guitarist, Professor Lezcano has performed in Columbia, Cuba, Peru, Ecuador, Brazil, Trinidad & Tobago (as well as in China, Europe and throughout the United States). A Fulbright Award enabled him to study the guitar in indigenous solstice festivals in Ecuador, where he also taught at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica. As a musician, Lezcano’s perspective on Central and South America’s political turmoil may reflect an entirely different sensibility from that of the political scientist.
Suggested reading is the article “Political Trends in Latin America,” by Jorge Castaneda, available at the library or via email by contacting Jane Malmberg, Library Director: jmalmberg@walpoletownlibrary.org. Also available at the library is the Master Class on DVD, “Politics in Latin America,” with which we will begin our meeting on June 26.
This is a complex topic to tackle, with dictatorships, social democracies and populist governments rising and falling. What does democracy look like in Latin America? Why have left-wing governments been popular? Can the new governments overcome problems of extreme income inequality, gang violence and leadership corruption? How well do we understand our southern neighbors, their contemporary elections, our own culpability, the growing influence of China and the plight of migrants seeking asylum?
All are welcome to join this public forum at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, June 26, either in person in the Hubbard Meeting Room at the Walpole Town Library or via Zoom. For the Zoom link, please contact Jane Malmberg in advance of the meeting: jmalmberg@walpoletownlibrary.org.

Clarion Deadline – 6/21/23
| It snuck up on us again, and it is time for your submissions for the July CLARION. Deadline is a week away, 5PM (Walpole Time) Wednesday June 21. Early submissions are always better to aid us in preparing a pleasing publication for your enjoyment (particularly this month). The sooner you get me your articles, announcements or advertisements, the proverbial better for proper placement and design work. Submission guidelines, and contact email are on the CLARION website. Remember, this is “your community resource” to share information about your group – its activities and events residents will enjoy attending. And, having a nice mix of articles for readers, I welcome “feel good” news of past local events, stories and accomplishments to share. All subject to space, of course, space that is made possible by the CLARION’s supporting advertisers. We all owe them a big “thank you.”If you have any questions, or interest in placing an advertisement, reaching over 1900 Walpole, North Walpole and Drewsville addresses, I welcome your inquiries, so please do get in touch with me. Advertising information and contact information is on the CLARION website.Thank you, yours, RAY BOAS, Publisher |

NH Gives – 6/6-7
Distant Hill Nature Trail is Participating in NH Gives next week, June 6-7
Distant Hill Nature Trail is an all volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit located in Walpole and Alstead. It is open to the public free of charge, year round. It’s our mission to make nature and the outdoors accessible to everyone.
Distant Hill is participating in NH Gives, an online fundraising event for nonprofits happening from 5pm Tuesday, June 6, to 5pm Wednesday, June 7. We only have 24 hours to raise the funds needed to build another half-mile of wheelchair and stroller-accessible trail, and to pour the concrete foundation for a new 24’ x 30’ outdoor learning pavilion.
With your help, Distant Hill hopes to win one of the three NH Gives ‘Power of Community Prizes’ for small organizations (a budget of under $150,000). The prizes go to the three small organizations with the largest number of “Individual Donations” during NH Gives. First place is $5,000; Second place is $3,000; and Third place is $2,000.
The number of “Individual Donations” are based on the unique email addresses that are used to make the donations.
For example: Say you would like to make a $50 donation to Distant Hill, and you have two email addresses in your household.
If you make two $25 donations using both of your email addresses, instead of it being counted as just one $50 donation, your two $25 donations will be counted as two “Individual Donations” for the same $50 donation!
We also have a $10,000 dollar-for-dollar match. Every dollar you donate during NH Gives will automatically be doubled!
