Reminder: CROP Walk Tomorrow – 10/11/25

ANNUAL WALPOLE CROP HUNGER WALK

October 11, 2025

For over 20 years, churches and community groups in Walpole have joined together to raise funds that are used by Church World Service (CWS) to alleviate hunger, both locally and globally. The funds are also used to assist in disaster situations, sustainable agriculture, and clean water practices around the world.  The Fall Mountain Food Shelf, our local recipient, will receive 25% of what we receive in donations, In the past, that has been about $3,000.

So please mark your calendar and  join us on Walk Day, Saturday, October 11th at 9:15.  We will meet at the First Congregational Church on the Common, where you can check in or register if you have not already done so online. The Walk is a three mile stroll around the village.  To participate in the walk, to register, to donate, or to find out more about the CROP Walk, go www.crophungerwalk.org/walpolenh. If you aren’t able to participate in the walk, but would like to donate, please consider donating, using the secure link.

The need is extremely great this year due to federal funding cuts. That reduction is being felt both globally and locally.  The Fall Mountain Food Shelf will receive significantly less food and financial support from USDA and the NH Food Bank.  Your support would be so appreciated.  Thank you!

Note:  CWS has received a 100% rating from Charity Navigator.  Questions? Please call Jana Sellarole at 603-313-4076.

Great Decisions at the Library – 10/13/25

Ambassador William Rugh will lead “Great Decisions”

discussion of US Foreign Policy in the Middle East

Ambassador Rugh was a U.S. Foreign Service Officer for 31 years and had nine diplomatic assignments in the Arab world, including ambassador to Yemen (1984-87) and to the United Arab Emirates (1992-95), as well as Deputy Chief of Mission in Syria (1981-84), public affairs officer in Saudi Arabia and Egypt. He has taught diplomacy and foreign policy at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, and at Northeastern University. He is the author of five books on public diplomacy in the Arab and Islamic worlds, US soft power and Arab mass media. Rugh holds a PhD in international relations from Columbia University. He is a Board member of the Middle East Policy Council and formerly was a Trustee of the American University in Cairo and an adjunct scholar at the Middle East Institute.

Ambassador Rugh will be joining us via Zoom as we discuss “American Policy in the Middle East” on Monday, October 13, at 6:00 p.m.

The Middle East suffers ceaseless conflicts, autocratic rulers, endemic social and economic disparity, unchecked population growth, and poor education systems. Peace between Israel and the Palestinians seems impossible. What are the options when the war in Gaza finally ends?

The relevant reading from the Foreign Policy Association is “American Policy in the Middle East: Taking Stock and Looking Ahead,” by Daniel C. Kurtzer, Professor of Middle East Policy Studies at Princeton and former U.S. Ambassador to Egypt and to Israel. A copy of this excellent article can be emailed to you upon request to Jane Malmberg, Library Director: jmalmberg@walpoletownlibrary.org

For those joining via Zoom, please request the Zoom link from the library prior to the meeting and join at 6:25 p.m., after the Foreign Policy video “Master Class.”

France Menk Photo Workshops – 10/4/25

FRANCEMENKPHOTOWORKSHOPS.COM

Have you ever spent time viewing something you believed would make a beautiful photo only to find, after you had taken it, that it was not what you had envisioned? Even though you ended up with a photograph, the feelings and impressions you had while taking it were not represented in that image?

In my workshops, you will discover how your camera lens differs from your eye’s, and how you can find the language you, yourself, own to translate those differences.

You will gain a deeper understanding of what ‘seeing’ tells us; a deeper comprehension of your own visions, and knowledge of how to represent them.

PS No age brackets. If you are old enough to know how to use a camera,
you are old enough to join.

Rail Trail Reopened

From Wendy Grossman:

The New Hampshire Bureau of Trails has completed its bridge repairs on the northern portion of the Cheshire Rail Trail in Walpole. The trail, which had been closed in this area during repairs, has been reopened.

The bridge near Malnati Farm now has a completely new, bicycle-friendly deck. At the bridge nearest to the Boat Launch, some of the gaps between deck planks have been filled to make the bridge surface more level. The repairs at both bridges should improve the safety and enjoyment of Walpole’s rail trail for users, especially bicyclists.

Many thanks to the New Hampshire Bureau of Trails.

October 2025 Clarion Closing Date – 9/22/25

From Ray Boas:

It is time again to send your submissions for the next CLARION — inputs are due for the October issue a week from now, by 5 pm Walpole Time, Monday 22 September. The files will go to the printer shortly thereafter – so do not miss out. With school back in session, and fall activities picking up there should be more to share with you in this issue and the rest of the year. Make sure to visit the CLARION website for contact information, and article and advertising submission details.

Your early submissions help as I start developing the layout well before the closing date. If you have some “news” send it along. I also like to have on-hand material of interest that is not time-sensitive to fill space to round out a pleasing issue. So, if you would “like to be in print” and have something to write and share (images as well), send along for possible inclusion space permitting. Please do remember, it is the advertisers in each issue that make this community publication possible, so please support and thank them.

If you have any questions, or interest in placing an advertisement, reaching over 1900 Walpole, North Walpole and Drewsville addresses, I welcome your inquiries, so please do get in touch with me. Advertising information and contact information is on the CLARION website.

Thank you, RAY BOAS, Publisher

Rail Trail Bridge Repairs Begin Today – 9/11/25

From Wendy Grossman:

RAIL TRAIL BRIDGE REPAIRS

Beginning today, the New Hampshire Bureau of Trails will be making bridge repairs on the northern portion of the Cheshire Rail Trail in Walpole.  During repairs, the rail trail will be closed from the Boat Launch/WMA area to just north of the rail trail bridge at Malnati Farm.  Please heed any signs and follow any instructions from the repair personnel.  It is hoped that the bridge repairs will be completed by the end of next week (9/20).
