| It snuck up on us again, and it is time for your submissions for the July CLARION. Deadline is a week away, 5PM (Walpole Time) Wednesday June 21. Early submissions are always better to aid us in preparing a pleasing publication for your enjoyment (particularly this month). The sooner you get me your articles, announcements or advertisements, the proverbial better for proper placement and design work. Submission guidelines, and contact email are on the CLARION website. Remember, this is “your community resource” to share information about your group – its activities and events residents will enjoy attending. And, having a nice mix of articles for readers, I welcome “feel good” news of past local events, stories and accomplishments to share. All subject to space, of course, space that is made possible by the CLARION’s supporting advertisers. We all owe them a big “thank you.”If you have any questions, or interest in placing an advertisement, reaching over 1900 Walpole, North Walpole and Drewsville addresses, I welcome your inquiries, so please do get in touch with me. Advertising information and contact information is on the CLARION website.Thank you, yours, RAY BOAS, Publisher |

NH Gives – 6/6-7
Distant Hill Nature Trail is Participating in NH Gives next week, June 6-7
Distant Hill Nature Trail is an all volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit located in Walpole and Alstead. It is open to the public free of charge, year round. It’s our mission to make nature and the outdoors accessible to everyone.
Distant Hill is participating in NH Gives, an online fundraising event for nonprofits happening from 5pm Tuesday, June 6, to 5pm Wednesday, June 7. We only have 24 hours to raise the funds needed to build another half-mile of wheelchair and stroller-accessible trail, and to pour the concrete foundation for a new 24’ x 30’ outdoor learning pavilion.
With your help, Distant Hill hopes to win one of the three NH Gives ‘Power of Community Prizes’ for small organizations (a budget of under $150,000). The prizes go to the three small organizations with the largest number of “Individual Donations” during NH Gives. First place is $5,000; Second place is $3,000; and Third place is $2,000.
The number of “Individual Donations” are based on the unique email addresses that are used to make the donations.
For example: Say you would like to make a $50 donation to Distant Hill, and you have two email addresses in your household.
If you make two $25 donations using both of your email addresses, instead of it being counted as just one $50 donation, your two $25 donations will be counted as two “Individual Donations” for the same $50 donation!
We also have a $10,000 dollar-for-dollar match. Every dollar you donate during NH Gives will automatically be doubled!

“Great Decisions”
Monday, May 15, 6:00 p.m.
Ambassador Stapleton Roy presents:
“Sino-American Relations: Past, Present & Future”
In just one week, on Monday, May 15, Ambassador J. Stapleton (“Stape”) Roy will lead our “Great Decisions” public forum in the Walpole Town Library. You won’t want to miss Ambassador Roy’s presentation: “Sino-American Relations: Past, Present & Future.”
The Ambassador will be joining via Zoom, and there will be an opportunity for questions and discussion following his presentation.
Ambassador Roy has immersed himself in the study of China and modern Asia throughout his long career. A fluent Mandarin-speaker, he rose to become a three-time United States Ambassador, serving in Singapore, the People’s Republic of China, and Indonesia. In 1996, he was promoted to the rank of Career Ambassador, the highest rank in the U.S. Foreign Service. In 2008, Roy was named director of the Kissinger Institute for Chinese-U.S. Studies at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, where he is now Founding Director Emeritus and a Distinguished Scholar. (Tonight he is attending Kissinger’s 100th birthday celebration!)
Suggested reading is the Foreign Policy Association’s article “China and America: Back to the Future,” by David Lampton, which is available at the library. A copy can be emailed to you upon request by contacting Jane Malmberg, Library Director: jmalmberg@walpoletownlibrary.org
Also available at the library is the DVD “Great Decisions,” with a 30-minute Master Class on China & the United States.

Reminder: Help Our Trails Tomorrow – 4/29/23
Saturday, April 29, 2023, 9 am – 12 pm
This is a reminder that the Walpole Trail Committee’s Help Our Trails Day is tomorrow, Saturday, April 29. Volunteers should meet at Town Hall by 9 am. There will be donuts and coffee. Our Trail Committee members have identified areas on Walpole trails that are in need of trail work. We’ll divide our volunteers into small teams and send the teams out to tackle various maintenance projects on our town’s trails.
Please dress for trail work and bring your own water, bug repellant, work gloves, and hand tools (clippers, loppers, hand saws, etc.) if you have them. Do not bring chain saws or power tools. Litter bags will be provided.
We think and hope that the rain forecast for tomorrow will mostly hold off until the afternoon. Just in case there are rain showers, it would be a good idea to bring rain gear.
If you haven’t signed up yet and plan to attend, it is recommended that you RSVP to walpoletrailhelpers@gmail.com, so that you will receive any last minute information.
We look forward to seeing you on Help Our Trails Day!
Wendy Grossman
