Holiday Shopping Can Benefit the Library
If you shop online at Amazon.com, here’s how you can support the library:
AmazonSmile is a simple and automatic way for you to support the Friends of the Walpole Town Library every time you shop at Amazon, and at no cost to you! When you shop at smile.amazon.com, you’ll find the same shopping experience as you do on Amazon.com, with the added bonus that Amazon will donate 0.5% of the value of your purchase to the Walpole Library.
Whether you currently have an Amazon.com account or not, just go to:
https://smile.amazon.com/ch/45-3910850 to select the Friends of the Walpole Town Library. Then every time you want to shop on Amazon, you just go to smile.amazon.com (instead of Amazon.com), and your purchases will support the library. Many purchases by many people over time add up to a big benefit for our library. Please spread the word to friends and family.
Happy Holidays, and thank you for supporting the Friends of the Walpole Town Library!
Please note: Thank you to everyone who contributed in any way to our recent book sale! It was a great success, raising $6,600 for our library! More details to follow in the January Clarion.
Notice to all Walpole Property Owners
The Town of Walpole NH has contracted with Avitar Associates of New England to conduct a revaluation that includes the measuring and listing of all properties in the Town.
Starting on Monday, November 14th, Avitar Associates’ assessing representatives will be visiting every home in Walpole with the goal of attempting to inspect upon arrival.
If no one is home, Avitar assessors will simply measure the exterior of all structures. After the initial visit, taxpayers will receive a letter with Avitar Associates’ contact information for arranging interior home inspections.
If you have any questions regarding the town-wide property revaluation project, please visit or contact the Selectboard Office at 756-3672 for more information.
Firewood Exchange
Thanks to Jackson Daviss for this good idea and Ben Daviss for letting us know about it! – Lil
Do you need firewood? Or do you have extra wood you can’t use? Come to the Walpole Transfer Station’s new Firewood Exchange. The station is collecting stove and fireplace wood, split or unsplit, green or dry, stove length or longer. If you need wood, come see what’s there and take home what you want. If you have extra that will rot or go soft before you can burn it, bring it in and help others keep warm this winter. Before leaving wood, see Paul at the transfer station for instructions.
The Detached Accessory Dwelling Units Petition
Thanks to Ray Boas I was able to get access to this petition (from the Planning Board) posted for those who may not yet be signed up for online Clarion. So great to have knowledgeable neighbors that can figure out a way to do this when I couldn’t! – Lil

Women of Walpole Speaker – 10/28/16
A Women of Walpole Special Speaker Event
Ben Kilham’s “The Social Black Bear:
What Bears Have Taught Me About Being Human”
The Women of Walpole, a service club, will present nationally renowned black bear expert Ben Kilham for a multimedia presentation at the Walpole Town Hall, October 28th at 7:00 PM. This lecture is a major fundraising event that will benefit Walpole worthy causes. Tickets may be purchased beginning Oct.1st from W.O.W. members or at the Galloway Real Estate office in Walpole. Tickets are $15 for adults, and all children under 12 who are accompanied by an adult are free. Tickets may also be purchased at the door of the Town Hall on Oct. 28th. There will be a question and answer period following the presentation, and refreshments will be served.
Black bears, thought to be solitary, have a different type of social behavior that possibly parallels early human behavior. They show evidence of reciprocal altruism, matrilinear hierarchy, and a mix of intentional and emotional communication. Bears can live for as many as forty years, which allows them long-term benefits from forming relationships with fellow cooperators.
Ben Kilham, Ph.D is a wildlife biologist based in Lyme, New Hampshire. His love of and devotion to black bears has enabled him to study their habits and interact with them for more than two decades. He, his wife Debra and sister Phoebe have accepted orphaned bear cubs into their home and enabled them to successfully return to the wild. Ben has been the focus of several news articles and documentaries, including National Geographic’s A Man Among Bears and Animal Planet’s Papa Bear. He is also author of the books Among the Bears: Raising Orphaned Cubs in the Wild and Out on a Limb: Origins of Intuition and Intelligence.
As residents of rural New Hampshire, many have his or her own bear visitor or bear sighting story. This event will not only educate the audience about these bear neighbors, but will provide funds for worthy Walpole causes.
