Growing a Life of Faith Takes a Hike on Saturday, June 18, 9:30 a.m.
The youth of 1st Congregational invite any area youth age 12-15 and their grown ups to enjoy one of the highlights of outdoor life in New Hampshire: a hike up Mount Monadnock! Rev. Craig and church staffer Karen Kitchen will lead kids and adult helpers up the White Cross trail. Participants should bring a backpack with a bag lunch, snacks and a plenty of water. Sneakers or hiking boots are also a must. The hike itself will take about four hours total and will be challenging at some points, but together we’ll do it and have a great time!

We will meet at 9:30 a.m. in front of the church to caravan down to the Mt. Monadnock Visitor Center and the White Cross trail. If people are traveling from Keene or points beyond, you can meet us at the state park’s Visitor Center at 10:30 a.m. Go to www.nhstateparks.org for directions to the Visitor Center and more information about safe hiking on the mountain. We aim to return to Walpole between 4:00 and 4:30 p.m. In case of rain or other inclement weather, we will choose an alternate date.

Friendly Friday on June 17, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
We hope to take full advantage of a beautiful summer evening to play crazy outdoor games and enjoy some good food and stories of our faith. Wear comfortable clothes (maybe some bug spray too!), bring a side or main dish to share and get ready to have some fun! Families of all kinds are invited to join us. Haven’t been to Friendly Friday in awhile? Come back and bring some friends with you! We’ll fill the Common with some joyful noise on June 17! “Like” the Friendly Fridays FaceBook page: www.facebook.com/FriendlyFridaysWalpole or contact the church for more information.

Marilou Blaine asked the following comments be added to the May Planning Board Minutes. – Lil

Mr. Dalessio comments:

Regarding a special exception, I was wondering whether or not the zoning board has considered it and if a public hearing was held.

Greg Gay said that the the N.W. zoning board was adamant that he had to come here (meaning the Walpole Planning Board) first for a site plan approval.

Mr. Dalessio asked Gay if he saw the whole board or just John Foster and Gay said just John Foster.

So you never really had a special exception hearing. Gay said John said it wasn’t necessary to have a public hearing.

The site plan as a site plan has to stand on its own. Whether or not it’s a permitted use is up to North Walpole.

The abutters were never notified of this new information to come and look at it.

My interpretation once new information is presented is abutters have some right to know what that information is before we can vote on it.

At this point Mr. Dalessio said the secretary would send the information to the Lennons, which she did..

Savings Bank of Walpole recently made its annual donation to Meeting Waters YMCA’s “Reach Out to Youth Scholarship Fund.”

“Savings Bank of Walpole and its Board of Trustees are deeply committed to supporting youth and educational programs,” said the bank’s President and CEO, Gregg Tewksbury.  “Meeting Waters YMCA is a valuable community resource in both areas. We are proud of our ongoing partnership and its positive impacts on youth, families, and communities throughout the region.”

Meeting Waters YMCA’s Executive Director, Steve Fortier, is equally proud of the ongoing relationship. “Savings Bank of Walpole’s generous charitable investments over the past several decades have helped hundreds of children and families with limited financial resources participate in our high-quality, high-impact programs. At a time where the ‘opportunity gap’ continues to widen in our region and our country, it is support from Savings Bank of Walpole and other contributors to our Reach Out to Youth Scholarship Fund that ensures that all children have equal access to programs that help them learn, grow and thrive. This builds not only strong children but strong families and communities, as well.”

Meeting Waters YMCA is a charitable, non-profit, social service organization founded in 1895. Its services positively impact children, teens, families and communities throughout the Fall Mountain, Springfield, Bellows Falls and Brattleboro regions. To join Savings Bank of Walpole and others in ensuring that all children and teens have access to Meeting Waters YMCA’s youth development programs, mail a check to the Y at PO Box 511, Bellows Falls, VT 01501 or visit their website where you can contribute through their quick and secure online system.

Bad News at the Library

I’m sure everyone joins me in hoping that this gets taken care of quickly.  We’ll all miss Justine and the entire staff and volunteers! – Lil

Attention Library Patrons! We are so sorry for the inconvenience but the library will be closed until further notice. As you know, we were supposed to get a new floor in the children’s room this week. We’ve discovered asbestos tile underneath the carpet and will be closed until it is taken care of. We will be working as quickly as possible to get the library back open and operating, but the safety of our patrons and staff comes first. Please do not worry about returning materials; all late fines that occur during our closing will be waived when we open again. Thank you for your patience during this time and enjoy the holidays with friends and family!

Be Careful What you Wish For

For those who have missed me, you will be happy to see that I am back in business.  Be aware though that there is a large stockpile of posts that will be filling your Inbox!

Assuming that the computer doctor has done a good job, this shouldn’t happen again.

Merry Christmas to all!

Letter from the Principal

This letter, from Mr. Jacobs, will be going home with students today.  since the playground responds to a community need, the school seeks to expand its horizons to include the entire community in this request.  Hopefully, we can all help. – Lil

December 4, 2015

Dear Walpole Parents and Community Members,

The children of Walpole could use your help.  Conditions of the existing primary school playground are deteriorating and becoming unsafe.  The playground was funded and built by volunteers in 1989.  It has provided excitement and challenges for many Walpole children, as well as visitors from other towns.

I will be forming a Playground Project Volunteer Committee with membership from parents, schools staff, community members, grandparents and alumni.  The new playground will be located near the existing playground.  This is a perfect location for the school and the town because it will be located near the Whitcomb Town Park.  The playground is used year round.

The committee’s goals will be:

  1. To design and build a safe playground for all area children.
  2. To involve the children in the design and fundraising efforts.
  3. To involve as many community members and businesses as possible.
  4. To use volunteer labor, when possible, in the construction of the playground.

These goals and concepts were used in the construction of the original playground and have been successful with two other playgrounds within our school district.  One thing about Walpole, all things are possible when this town supports its children.

If you are interested, please contact me at the Walpole School 603-756-4728.

Sincerely,

Sam Jacobs, Principal

Giving Tuesday

It is Giving Tuesday. There are a lot of worthy non-profits in our community struggling to feed, house, educate, advocate, and enrich the lives of folks in the area. One of those programs is Walpole Art After School, an independent nonprofit art enrichment program for kids in first through sixth grades. We’re in our tenth year of encouraging imaginations and building community. Over two dozen kids are registered this semester. Walpole Art After School makes it possible for the kids to learn how to live with diversity, collaborate with others, and problem solve, as well as giving them the opportunity to create masterpieces and have fun.
This tenth year presents Walpole Art After School with challenges and opportunities. We have never charged tuition because we don’t want to turn a child away or have a program that is available only to those with financial means. For several years, Walpole Art After School was the beneficiary of a very generous grant that funded two-thirds of the annual costs. The grant has concluded due to the death of the donor. At the same time, we are growing and there is interest in starting a second weekly session that will target older kids and offer more intensive art instruction. The cost per student for a semester is $200, which is equivalent to about $6.50 an hour. This great program is a bargain and is one of the activities that makes Walpole so attractive to families.

On this Giving Tuesday, please consider sponsoring a young artist with a donation to Walpole Art After School, P.O. Box 179, Walpole, NH. For more information, contact Susan Kershaw, Executive Director, info@walpoleartafterschool.org. To see photos of the program activities, check out our website: www.walpoleartafterschool.org.
